Fortunatley for me, I didn't grow up in a severely religious household, but I did have a moderatley religious father who I defintiley did not get along with. Growing up we ate kosher, prayed before we ate, went to synagogue, and we respected shabbat. This meant we couldn't use any electricity in the house, or drive a car, or...anything! I hated mostly everything about this lifestyle. I hated having to wait before eating. I hated not being able to eat my favorite non-kosher foods. I hated the stupid stuck up religious girls at my private school, I hated not being allowed to have non jewish friends or talk to boys, and i HATED HATED HATED going to synongogue. The men and women were seperated, the children were always way younger than me, I had to wear a long skirt, I couldn't understand the words because it was all in hebrew. Unlike many skeptics I hear about, I didn't just fall out of belief of God, I grew up hating him. Yes, hating God. Meaning I believed in him, but I hated him.

I had so many strict rules put upon me, why would a kind God allow that? Why would that God make my father take away the things that made me happy and enforce irrantional rules on me? Why would God make him do that? Did God know my dad would be so horrible? Did God MAKE him so horrible? Is God punishing me for thinking about naughty things like wishing I could talk to a boy or be liked by a boy? Am I an experiment? Why was I so ugly? Why did I have no social skills? Why was I so anxious of the outside world? Why did God make a family SO PERFECT...only to dangle it in front of my face in the form of my cousin's family? As I swung upon a swing-set belonging to my cousin (one where I was told I was too fat to sit on...even though I was likely a perfectly weighted child) I asked my father: Who made God? His reply was not satisfactory to me. He told me to stop asking questions, and that God was always there. Did he... even know anything about God? Well...I do!
